Thailand and Cambodia Renew Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

Thailand and Cambodia Renew Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Following a week of deadly clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border, both countries have agreed to immediately renew their ceasefire, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday. The renewed agreement comes after at least 20 people were killed and around half a million displaced in the recent violence, which threatened to escalate into a larger conflict. President Trump credited his personal intervention, alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, for facilitating the agreement and bringing both sides back to the negotiating table.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that he had held a “very good” conversation with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Both leaders reportedly agreed to cease all hostilities effective immediately and return to the “original Peace Accord” signed in October in Kuala Lumpur, with Trump and Ibrahim acting as witnesses to the deal. Trump described the revival of peace ties as a major diplomatic achievement and hailed the efforts to prevent further bloodshed in the region.

The recent clashes began earlier this week after Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military positions on Monday morning. This retaliation followed Cambodian shelling that killed a Thai soldier and injured several others along the tense border region. According to the Royal Thai Army, Cambodian forces fired shells and rockets around 7 am in the Chong Bok area of Nam Yuen district. One Thai soldier was killed, and four others were injured in the attack. In response, Thai troops returned fire and conducted airstrikes using fighter jets to stop further assaults from Cambodian forces.

Trump characterized the initial roadside bomb incident, which triggered the latest violence, as an accident, while acknowledging Thailand’s strong military response. He emphasized that both Thailand and Cambodia are now ready for peace and expressed his honor in helping resolve what could have become a major war between the two nations. He also thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his assistance in mediating the ceasefire.

The renewed agreement marks a critical step in stabilizing the long-tense border region and underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement in preventing regional conflicts. The return to the original Peace Accord is expected to halt further violence, protect civilian lives, and facilitate the safe return of displaced populations. Both Thailand and Cambodia have expressed willingness to continue trade and maintain peaceful relations with the United States, signaling a commitment to long-term stability in Southeast Asia.

The border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia have historically been fraught, with occasional outbreaks of violence over territorial claims. This latest flare-up highlights the vulnerability of communities living near the border and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution. Analysts believe that the renewed ceasefire, supported by international diplomacy, could serve as a framework for preventing future escalations and promoting regional security.
