A devastating Telangana bus crash on the Chevella–Bijapur highway claimed 19 lives, including three young sisters from Tandur. Their father, a driver who devoted his life to educating his daughters, is left shattered
The quiet town of Tandur in Telangana’s Vikarabad district woke up to tragedy on Monday when a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus collided with a gravel-laden truck on the Chevella–Bijapur highway. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the bus was crushed, killing 19 people and leaving many others injured. What began as a normal morning for families sending their children and loved ones to Hyderabad for college or work turned into an unthinkable day of loss
Among the grieving families is that of Yellaiah Goud, a driver who spent his entire life ensuring his daughters received a good education. He has four daughters — one married and three studying in Hyderabad. All three lost their lives in the tragic Telangana bus crash, leaving their parents heartbroken. The sisters had returned home over the weekend for a family wedding. “They were full of laughter when they left that morning,” said a relative. “Their father worked day and night to educate them. This loss has crushed the entire family.”
The accident site near Mirzaguda-Khanapur Road in Ranga Reddy district presented scenes of devastation. Rescue workers described gravel spilling into the bus, trapping passengers beneath the debris. Among the victims was 33-year-old Saliha Begum and her three-month-old baby boy. “The mother was still holding her child when we found them,” said a rescue worker. Another victim, N. Hanumanthu, had missed an earlier train and boarded the ill-fated bus instead. His 10-year-old son, Vivek, wept inconsolably as relatives held him close
A survivor recalled the terrifying moments of the crash. “I was asleep when a deafening sound woke me up. I was half-buried in gravel and broke a window to escape,” he said. “Those sitting near the driver didn’t survive.” Police confirmed that 72 passengers were on board, including the driver who died instantly. Rescue teams used earthmovers to clear the mangled bus, while hospitals in Chevella treated survivors with multiple injuries
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the Telangana bus crash and announced ₹2 lakh compensation for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PM’s Relief Fund. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called the incident “heart-wrenching” and ordered officials to ensure immediate relief and support for victims’ families
As Tandur mourned, its narrow streets filled with funeral processions and cries of grief. Shops remained closed as neighbours gathered to support one another. “They left home smiling,” said a neighbour softly. “None of them came back.” The Telangana bus crash has left a deep wound in the hearts of those who lost loved ones and serves as a painful reminder of life’s fragility
