Taiwan has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and enhancing its defense capabilities in response to China's extensive military maneuvers near the island, which included the launch of numerous rockets and the deployment of various military assets.
During a live New Year’s address from Taipei, President Lai Ching-te declared Taiwan's determination to protect itself against potential threats. “As president, my stance has always been steadfast: to resolutely defend national sovereignty and fortify national defense,” he stated. Lai underscored that the activities conducted by China were aimed at assessing Taiwan's emerging military capabilities, stressing the necessity for heightened preparedness.
President Lai urged opposition parties to back his initiative to augment Taiwan's defense budget by $40 billion. This proposal is currently at a standstill due to a deadlock within the opposition-led legislature. He indicated that 2026 will be a pivotal year for Taiwan, asserting the need to “prepare for the worst while aspiring for the best.”
Despite escalating tensions, Lai expressed a willingness for dialogue with China on equal terms, provided that Beijing acknowledges Taiwan's sovereignty and democratic way of life. “We are open to cooperative exchanges with China on an equal and dignified basis, fostering a peaceful atmosphere across the strait,” he remarked.
In reaction to Lai’s address, a spokesperson from China's Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the speech as “riddled with falsehoods and irresponsible claims,” alleging that Taiwan aims to mislead the global audience.
The military drills, titled “Justice Mission 2025,” represent China's most significant exercise near Taiwan regarding both scale and proximity. These operations resulted in the cancellation of numerous domestic flights in Taiwan and the mobilization of military aircraft and naval vessels to monitor developments. The maneuvers unfolded shortly after the U.S. announced a record arms package valued at $11.1 billion for Taiwan. Beijing emphasized that these drills were intended to dissuade external interference and reaffirmed that China's endeavor for “reunification” with Taiwan will not be thwarted.
The global community, including the European Commission and the UK, expressed unease regarding these military exercises, labeling them a risk to regional stability. Analysts highlight that the situation exemplifies rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, underscoring the critical need for robust defense strategies and diplomatic initiatives to avert potential conflict.
Taiwan maintains its focus on bolstering defense while seeking peaceful engagement, despite China's continuous insistence on its claims over the island. President Lai's declaration mirrors the resolve of the Taiwanese populace to uphold their democratic values and lifestyle amid increasing pressures from Beijing.
