A diplomatic row has emerged between South Korea and Israel after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung raised concerns over alleged human rights abuses by Israeli forces.
The controversy began when Lee commented on a social media video that reportedly showed Israeli soldiers mistreating a Palestinian individual. He called for verification of the incident and questioned whether appropriate action had been taken.
In response, Israel’s foreign ministry strongly rejected the claims, stating that the incident had already been investigated. It also accused Lee of amplifying misinformation by referencing content from an unreliable source.
The video in question is believed to be linked to a 2024 incident in the West Bank, where footage showed an Israeli soldier pushing a body off a rooftop. The clip had previously drawn international criticism, including concerns raised by global leaders.
South Korea’s foreign ministry attempted to ease tensions, clarifying that Lee’s remarks were intended as a broader call for universal human rights rather than a direct accusation against Israel.
However, Lee issued another statement expressing disappointment, urging Israel to reflect on global criticism regarding alleged violations of human rights and international law.
The dispute highlights growing sensitivity around information shared on social media and underscores the complex diplomatic balance South Korea maintains as an ally of the United States while navigating Middle East tensions.
