Singapore Drama Faces Backlash Over Scam Portrayal

Singapore Drama Faces Backlash Over Scam Portrayal

Post by : Shakul

A Singapore-produced television drama has sparked criticism in Malaysia over its portrayal of the country as a base for scam operations. The controversy has drawn attention from various groups concerned about how such depictions may influence global perceptions.

The Mandarin-language series Highway to Somewhere, produced by Mediacorp, aired between March and April. The show features storylines involving road trips into Malaysia, including one plot where travelers become victims of a scam syndicate.

Several Malaysian Chinese associations have raised concerns about the narrative, arguing that it could mislead international audiences. They warned that portraying Malaysia in such a manner might harm the country’s reputation and create negative impressions among viewers unfamiliar with the region.

Critics also pointed out that such portrayals risk reinforcing stereotypes and could potentially impact key sectors like tourism. They expressed concern that repeated negative depictions in media may overshadow the country’s cultural richness and hospitality.

In response to the backlash, screenwriter Ang Eng Tee clarified that there was no intention to tarnish Malaysia’s image. He stated that the storyline was inspired by real-world scam cases and emphasized that such crimes occur globally, not just in one country.

The creators further explained that the series also highlights Malaysia’s scenic beauty, featuring locations such as Ipoh, Kukup, and Port Dickson. According to them, the intention was to promote travel and showcase lesser-known destinations alongside the storyline.

They also urged audiences to view the series in its entirety before forming conclusions. The narrative, they said, ultimately shows law enforcement taking action against criminals while raising awareness about the growing threat of scams worldwide.
