Singapore is set to build its first 3D-printed concrete pedestrian bridge in Jurong, marking a significant step in adopting advanced construction technologies. The project, led by the Land Transport Authority, is expected to be completed by 2028 and will help improve connectivity between Jurong West and Tengah town.
The 10-metre-long and 5-metre-wide bridge will be designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. It is part of a pilot initiative to explore how 3D concrete printing can enhance productivity in Singapore’s labour-scarce construction sector. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University, along with engineering firm Witteveen+Bos and construction company CES_Innovfab.
3D concrete printing is a highly automated method where concrete is layered through a nozzle to form structures without traditional moulds. This approach reduces manual labour and temporary construction requirements while enabling more flexible and complex architectural designs compared to conventional methods.
Authorities have already completed structural testing on a scaled model using heavy load simulations. If the results meet safety standards, construction of the full-scale bridge will proceed, followed by further testing before it opens to the public. Officials say the project will help assess the long-term feasibility of using 3D printing technology in infrastructure development.
