During a pivotal leadership discussion at the University of Cambridge, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan emphasized the necessity for intensified collaboration and innovative solutions to address climate challenges.
The event, held at Robinson College, formed part of Cambridge’s Sustainability Leadership Alumni Insight Sharing Day. Sheikha Shamma engaged in a focused conversation with Lindsay Hooper, CEO of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, covering essential topics in climate leadership and sustainability's future.
In her remarks, Sheikha Shamma underscored the urgency of accelerating climate strategies within the UAE and the broader region. She stressed that existing initiatives need to be rapidly expanded and encouraged the removal of obstacles to support enduring sustainability objectives.
Furthermore, she highlighted the significance of fostering a cohesive sustainability framework, where environmental practices are seamlessly integrated within organizations rather than simply regarded as checklist items.
Touching upon the need for global collaboration, Sheikha Shamma urged nations and entities to unite despite prevalent global divides, noting the shared responsibility in laying the groundwork for a sustainable future for generations to come.
She also pointed out that climate leadership transcends those strictly within climate-oriented professions. As she indicated, experts from diverse fields can introduce climate-conscious perspectives and teamwork into their respective disciplines.
Emphasizing the interconnectedness of climate issues with various sectors, she argued for interdisciplinary collaboration, asserting that individuals who incorporate systems thinking and sustainability into their everyday professional tasks can effect substantial change.
Currently, Sheikha Shamma presides over Frontier25 and The Climate Tribe, and chairs Alliances for Global Sustainability, RESET MENA, and Aurora50.
Sheikha Shamma possesses a Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership and an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies awarded by the University of Cambridge.
