Sheikh Sultan Launches Don McCullin Exhibition in Athens

Post by : Badri Ariffin

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, has officially inaugurated a significant photography exhibition in Athens, Greece, titled “Life, Death, & Everything in Between” by renowned photographer Sir Don McCullin.

This exhibition is facilitated by the Athens Photo World Awards in collaboration with the Xposure International Photography Festival, a prominent annual event organized by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau.

Tour Insights and Exhibition Highlights

During his visit, Sheikh Sultan explored the exhibition's galleries, reflecting on key works from McCullin’s extensive career, which spans over five decades. The collection features striking images from conflict zones including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lebanon, as well as serene landscapes from England, Africa, India, and Indonesia.

He commended the strong humanitarian essence embedded within McCullin’s work—depicting both suffering and resilience, leaving a profound emotional impact on viewers.

Narrative Journey Through Life and Death

The exhibition offers a visual expedition through McCullin’s career. It commences with his early work in impoverished areas of London, transitions to his war photography, and concludes with tranquil and natural scenes. His artistry is celebrated for encapsulating genuine human emotions amid pressing global realities.

Sir Don McCullin is highly regarded as one of the world’s leading documentary photographers, with a career marked by coverage of wars and humanitarian crises, often under perilous conditions. His dedication to truth and humanity remains unwavering despite facing dangers.

Cultural Collaborations across Borders

The collaboration between the Xposure International Photography Festival and the Athens Photo World Awards underscores the critical role of photography as a medium for documenting truth and humanity. It represents a testament to Xposure’s expanding global prominence as a hub for visual storytelling.

Permanence in Greece

In a remarkable announcement, it was revealed that McCullin’s exhibition will become a permanent feature at the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in Greece, ensuring his legacy is preserved for future generations.

Gift of Appreciation

At this occasion, Sheikh Sultan presented Sir Don McCullin with a special limited-edition Leica “Monochrom” camera, which bears the Sharjah name and emblem, crafted exclusively for the Xposure Photography Festival.

Visit to the Acropolis Museum

In addition, Sheikh Sultan visited the Acropolis Museum in Athens, touring its galleries and discovering its historical and archaeological significance.

The museum ranks among the world’s foremost archaeological institutions, covering over 25,000 square meters and featuring more than 4,000 artifacts from the Classical and Roman epochs.

Its collections are categorized into three sections: daily life in ancient Athens, sculptures from the Parthenon, and Classical masterpieces, including the iconic Caryatid statues.

Notably, the museum is esteemed for its modern architectural elegance, glass floors offering views of the Acropolis, and sophisticated lighting systems that enhance the preservation and display of ancient marble artworks.
