In a heartbreaking incident, 28-year-old Army veteran Scottie Williams died shortly after finishing the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon in San Diego. His sudden collapse near a hydration station stunned family and friends. Despite immediate CPR efforts lasting nearly 90 minutes, medics were unable to save him.
Originally from California, Williams served as a transport driver in Korea and Syria, where he faced challenges with PTSD upon returning home. Rated 80% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs, he managed to rebuild his life, working at a ski resort and embracing a nature-driven lifestyle.
Just two days prior to the marathon, he shared a significant moment with his mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, over FaceTime. He showed her his new apartment and excitedly disclosed his intention to marry his girlfriend, Bree Rivera, in secrecy. Rivera was waiting at the finish line, completely unaware of the impending tragedy.
In San Diego, Williams found joy along the coast, enjoying a loving relationship and the therapeutic atmosphere of the city. His mother noted that he seemed the happiest she had seen him in years.
The unexpected nature of his passing has saddened the local community. When his body was returned to Ridgecrest, a procession of residents, law enforcement, and veterans honored him with American flags. A GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs has already raised over $20,000, with his funeral set for next weekend.
His mother hopes he will be remembered for his strength, compassion, and incredible journey from trauma to a fulfilling life. “He was one of the best people I’ve ever known,” she stated, imploring others to celebrate his legacy.
The family is now waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of his sudden collapse, while tributes from friends, fellow veterans, and the running community continue to flow in, honoring Williams’ bravery and spirit.
Williams’ story serves as a poignant reminder of the silent struggles many veterans endure, exemplifying the resilience required to heal and thrive.
