In a thrilling display, Sanju Samson scored 37 runs off just 22 balls against South Africa in Ahmedabad, compelling the selectors to rethink Shubman Gill's vice-captaincy. With Gill sidelined due to an injury, Samson’s impactful performance could solidify his position as an opener for the upcoming New Zealand series and the T20 World Cup.
At 26, Gill was positioned as T20 vice-captain to prepare him for future leadership, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav. However, his current form doesn't align with Team India's aggressive ethos, having not registered a fifty since rejoining the T20 squad, with a concerning drop in strike rate. Changes made to his technique in Test cricket seem to have negatively influenced his T20 performance.
Previously, Samson was relegated to a lower batting order due to Gill’s promotion, despite having a stronger T20 track record, including three centuries last season. This shift left him out until Gill's unfortunate injury opened the door for another chance.
Following his recent form, Samson may become a regular opening partner for Abhishek Sharma, providing much-needed depth at the top. Gill's injury, though a setback, might inadvertently benefit a team grappling with players like skipper Suryakumar Yadav struggling to find form. Samson’s knack for performing under pressure strengthens India’s lineup as pivotal series approach.
