Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is facing criticism over his recent reactions after being left out of the team, with former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney warning that the Egyptian star risks tarnishing his legacy at the club. Salah, who has spent eight successful years at Liverpool, becoming a club icon with two Premier League titles and over 250 goals in all competitions, has struggled for form this season. He has scored only five goals in 19 appearances across all competitions, and he missed the starting lineup in the last three matches.
Following Liverpool’s 3-3 Premier League draw against Leeds United, Salah openly expressed his frustration, claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” amid the team’s poor start to the season. His comments came after a two-year contract extension signed in April, a deal that highlighted his importance to the club.
Rooney, speaking on his podcast, criticised Salah’s approach, saying, “He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool. It would be sad for him to throw it all away. He’s gone about it all wrong.” The former striker also suggested that Liverpool manager Arne Slot needs to assert his authority, stating, “Arne Slot has to show his authority and pull him in and say, ‘you are not travelling with the team, what you said is not acceptable.’ Take yourself off to Afcon and let everything calm down. If I was him, there would be no way he would be in the team.”
Salah’s remarks have raised eyebrows as Liverpool struggle in the Premier League, currently sitting ninth, ten points behind leaders Arsenal after 15 games. Rooney added, “If anything, he has thrown Liverpool under the bus with his words. I am sure over the next couple of years he will regret saying what he has.”
The situation has cast a shadow over Salah’s otherwise illustrious career at Liverpool, and his future relationship with the team may depend on how both he and the club navigate this tense period.
