Kyiv, Ukraine:
In a series of nighttime assaults, Russian military actions resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals across Ukraine, impacting a passenger train, residential areas, and crucial energy infrastructures, as reported by local officials on Tuesday.
In the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone targeted a train with nearly 200 passengers onboard, claiming at least five lives. Prosecutor-shared visuals depicted a burning carriage, which emergency responders later confirmed had extinguished.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the offensive, emphasizing the lack of military justification for attacking civilians. He urged allies to amplify pressure on Moscow, stating that these strikes threaten the progress toward peace.
Over in Odesa, more than 50 Russian drones resulted in the deaths of three and injuries to over 30, including a 39-week pregnant woman and two young girls. Authorities reported damages to several residential structures as rescue teams scoured the debris for survivors.
In Sloviansk, a couple, aged 45 and 48, lost their lives in an attack, while their 20-year-old son managed to survive. Additional fatalities were recorded in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson due to drone and artillery strikes.
The recent airstrikes have severely impacted Ukraine's energy sector. DTEK, a private energy firm, noted significant damage to one of its facilities in Odesa, while state gas company Naftogaz reported a separate site ablaze—the fifth such incident this month. Millions of Ukrainians are now facing critical power and heating shortages amid freezing temperatures.
Ukraine's air force stated that 165 drones were deployed overnight, affecting an infrastructural site in the Lviv region as well.
Even with ongoing peace negotiations in the United Arab Emirates, Zelensky remarked that the bombardments demonstrate Russia’s disregard for diplomatic solutions. The subsequent round of discussions is set for February 1.
Additionally, Russia announced the capture of two villages in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, signaling a continued slow push at the front lines.
