A rare public protest broke out in Russia on Sunday after authorities banned the popular US children’s gaming platform Roblox, drawing attention to growing frustration over online censorship in the country. Several dozen people gathered in the Siberian city of Tomsk to oppose the decision, marking an unusual display of dissent at a time when public protests are uncommon.
The protest took place in Vladimir Vysotsky Park, where people stood in freezing temperatures holding hand-written placards calling for the ban to be lifted. Messages such as “Hands off Roblox” and “Roblox is the victim of the digital Iron Curtain” were seen on signs held by demonstrators. Photographs from the event showed around 25 people standing together in the snow, expressing their anger over the restriction.
Earlier this month, Russia’s communications regulator announced that it had blocked Roblox, claiming the platform contained content that could harm the moral and spiritual development of children. Officials said the ban was necessary to protect young users from inappropriate material and online risks.
The decision has triggered debate across Russia, especially among parents, teachers and young users. While some adults support the ban due to concerns that children could be exposed to sexual content or communicate with adults on the platform, others argue that blocking the game is ineffective and unnecessary. Many Russians point out that internet restrictions can easily be bypassed using virtual private networks, making such bans largely symbolic.
Roblox is one of several foreign digital platforms restricted or blocked in Russia, alongside major social media services. The government says strict censorship is required to protect the country during what it describes as an ongoing information war and to defend traditional values from Western influence.
Critics, however, say the Roblox ban highlights a wider problem, including the lack of strong domestic alternatives and the growing gap between official restrictions and everyday digital habits. Young users in particular have questioned why a popular gaming platform is banned when it remains easily accessible through simple workarounds.
Roblox, which is based in the United States, has faced restrictions in other countries as well over child safety concerns. The company has previously stated that it is committed to user safety and has built protections designed to keep children secure while using the platform.
The Tomsk protest, though small, reflects a growing irritation among some Russians over digital censorship and the impact it has on daily life. As authorities continue to tighten control over online platforms, the debate over freedom, safety and the effectiveness of internet bans is becoming harder to ignore.
