Russia has reportedly intensified its demands on the United States, urging Washington to assist in clearing the path for imminent military operations against Kyiv. This includes calls for the evacuation of embassy personnel and foreign nationals from the Ukrainian capital, as Moscow gears up for what they term “systematic strikes” targeting military assets in the city.
During a recent phone conversation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reportedly conveyed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio the plans for new attacks aimed at Ukraine’s military leadership and operational sites. Russian officials maintained that the U.S. should withdraw its diplomats from Kyiv in advance of the planned strikes.
This warning follows one of the most intense missile and drone bombardments on Kyiv in recent history, with approximately 90 missiles and a barrage of drones unleashed upon the city and its surroundings, including the formidable Oreshnik hypersonic missile. Ukrainian authorities reported significant damage to residential areas, schools, and cultural sites, with multiple casualties resulting from the assaults.
Russian officials characterized the forthcoming strikes as reprisals for Ukrainian assaults in Russian-controlled regions, particularly in Luhansk. Moscow accuses Kyiv of endangering civilian lives by targeting infrastructure within these territories. Ukraine, however, firmly denies these allegations, asserting that its military actions are focused solely on military targets against Russia’s war efforts.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the recent Russian offensives and cautioned that the deployment of Oreshnik missiles poses considerable global security hazards. European leaders have echoed these sentiments, criticizing Russia’s tactics and alluding to “nuclear brinkmanship” due to the missile’s capacity for nuclear warheads, despite no nuclear ordnance being utilized in these recent attacks.
These developments have compounded challenges for ongoing diplomatic efforts. The U.S. continues to attempt mediation between the two nations, although repeated ceasefire negotiations have met with little success. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated Washington's commitment to diplomatic dialogue, acknowledging the sluggish pace of progress.
Military experts suggest that Russia could be on the verge of broader military endeavors aimed at debilitating Ukraine’s military framework and diminishing its long-term warfare capabilities. Analysts note a sustained focus on essential infrastructure targets, including energy systems and command facilities.
With air raid alerts ongoing throughout various Ukrainian regions, the atmosphere in Kyiv remains fraught with tension. Many citizens have sought refuge in underground metro stations as fears of further offensive actions loom. Foreign governments are also reevaluating travel protocols and security measures for personnel based in Ukraine.
Despite the escalating threats, Ukrainian officials assert their determination to defend Kyiv and repel Russian advances. President Zelenskyy continues to call for increased international military backing and enhanced air defense systems to safeguard civilians against prospective missile and drone attacks.
