In a thrilling match, Cristian Romero's exceptional overhead kick in stoppage time rescued Tottenham Hotspur from a 2-2 defeat against Newcastle, providing much-needed relief for manager Thomas Frank amid recent struggles.
Although Newcastle dominated the game with significant possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, it was Romero who shone brightly for Spurs, scoring both of their goals despite the team having just two shots on target.
The first of his two strikes arrived in the 78th minute via a diving header from a precise cross by Mohammed Kudus, leveling the score after Bruno Guimaraes had initially put Newcastle ahead. Soon after, Anthony Gordon restored Newcastle’s lead with a penalty.
Just when it appeared Newcastle was on the verge of victory, Romero delivered once again in the dying moments. His overhead kick from a corner, slightly mis-hit, found its way through the crowd of defenders and into the goal, securing a vital point for Spurs.
This dramatic outcome leaves Spurs positioned 11th in the Premier League, just above Newcastle in 13th place. Frank commended his team’s determination and emphasized their “fantastic mentality and character” after a grueling schedule.
Despite their dominance, Newcastle was left frustrated by missed chances, including a shot from Joelinton that struck the post. Manager Eddie Howe expressed his disappointment at seeing a lead vanish late in the contest.
Romero’s last-minute heroics have ensured Spurs avoid a third defeat in a row, while Newcastle reflects on a game where they could have secured all three points.
