The State of Qatar has firmly reiterated that acknowledging the Nakba is crucial for securing a just, comprehensive, and enduring resolution to the Palestinian conflict.
This declaration was made by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a dedicated session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. This significant meeting took place at the UN headquarters in New York City to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Nakba.
Sheikha Alya underlined the necessity of adopting General Assembly Resolution 79/82, expressing Qatar's pride in co-sponsoring the initiative. She emphasized that recognizing the Nakba is imperative for progressing toward an equitable and lasting peace resolution for Palestinians.
Furthermore, she stressed the importance of remembering the names of Palestinian children who lost their lives in this ongoing conflict, referring to them as innocent victims of a persistent Nakba, whose plight should not be overlooked by the global community.
Qatar condemned Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, which include the reclassification of Palestinian land as Israeli “state land,” the expansion of settlements, attempts to introduce capital punishment in the West Bank, and restrictions on religious freedoms for Muslims and Christians in occupied Jerusalem.
On the Gaza situation, the Qatari envoy called for strict adherence to the ceasefire agreement, insisting on the reopening of border crossings to facilitate ongoing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
She reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to mediation efforts focused on achieving peace and pointed out the necessity of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
Reiterating Qatar's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and people based on international law and a two-state solution, the country advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement also highlighted the urgency to conclude Israeli occupation and settlement expansion, halting illegal practices in the region, and safeguarding the right of return for Palestinian refugees in accordance with international law.
Finally, Qatar confirmed its ongoing political, diplomatic, and financial backing for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to sustain its humanitarian initiatives for Palestinian refugees.
