Qatar Champions Global Health Initiatives at WHO Assembly on Longevity

Qatar Champions Global Health Initiatives at WHO Assembly on Longevity

Post by : Badri Ariffin

At the Seventy-Ninth World Health Assembly, Qatar took center stage by hosting a pivotal global gathering focused on healthy longevity, emphasizing it as a vital societal investment.

This significant event convened health leaders, ministers, and experts from around the world to deliberate on enhancing life expectancy and fortifying healthcare frameworks for the elderly.

Co-sponsoring nations included Japan, Finland, and Thailand, along with global organizations committed to public health and aging issues.

In his address, Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud declared that healthy longevity is a crucial priority for both Qatar and the global community. He outlined Qatar's vision, which prioritizes prevention, scientific innovation, and health partnerships to enrich the quality of life as people age.

He highlighted that the goal transcends mere life extension; it aims for healthier living. Achieving this necessitates robust public health approaches, preventive healthcare, and integrated efforts across various sectors.

The Minister also emphasized the influence of Qatar's WHO Collaborating Centre on Healthy Ageing in bolstering international health endeavors and promoting progressive research in this sector.

The assembly spotlighted the need to merge prevention, healthcare financing, governance, and innovation to elevate health outcomes and adapt to demographic shifts.

Hanan Balkhy articulated the healthcare dilemmas in the Eastern Mediterranean, highlighting disparities where some countries boast advanced systems, while others falter due to conflicts.

She underscored strengthening primary healthcare as vital to bridging life expectancy gaps, pinpointing the significance of early disease detection, managing non-communicable diseases, and ensuring universal health coverage.

A panel, led by Salim Salama, deliberated on how governments can translate healthy longevity ambitions into actionable policies via prevention, digital healthcare, and innovative financing.

Bettina Borisch remarked on the necessity for equitable access in longevity policies, insisting investments must reach the vulnerable segments of society.

Gregor Sneddon advocated for combating ageism, asserting that older adults should be seen as valuable societal contributors rather than solely care receivers.

Masami Sakoi shared insights from Japan regarding their longevity practices and indicated how healthy aging can underpin economic stability.

Heli Hatunen elaborated on Finland's welfare model, where health and well-being are core to national policies across sectors.

Furthermore, Amporn Benjaponpitak detailed Thailand's initiatives in nurturing community health networks enhanced by digital health technology.

Collectively, attendees agreed that healthy longevity transcends healthcare; it's a social and economic imperative. They called for cohesive policies that foster long-term development and societal well-being.

The summit further solidified Qatar's emerging status as a focal point for international cooperation on healthy longevity, uniting experts across science, policy, finance, and healthcare innovation.

The discussions culminated in essential recommendations for amplifying global cooperation on aging policies and integrating health dimensions into public decision-making. This ongoing dialogue aims to reshape perceptions of aging and secure health investments through life stages.
