A 24-year-old man from Punjab, Twinkle Randhawa, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Italy last week. His grieving family is urgently demanding a thorough investigation and assistance from the Indian government to bring his body back to India for last rites.
Twinkle had moved to Italy about four months ago, hoping to build a better future. His financially struggling parents even took a loan to support his move. Prior to Italy, Twinkle had lived in Dubai for a year. Despite his dreams, his family has been left devastated by the unclear details surrounding his death.
Twinkle’s relatives revealed that after failing to contact him for several days, they reached out to the men living with him in Italy. However, these men gave inconsistent and confusing accounts of Twinkle's whereabouts. Sometimes they said he hadn’t woken up, other times they claimed the police had taken him away, making it impossible for the family to get clear information.
Sarban Singh, a family relative, shared, “When we asked about Twinkle, those staying with him gave different excuses every time. The family is in dire financial straits, and his father drives a car to support the household.”
Jagir Singh, Twinkle’s father, who works as a driver in Punjab, said he last spoke to his son two days ago, and Twinkle seemed perfectly fine. “He was okay during our last conversation, but after that, we lost all contact,” he said.
Jagir also described how they were told by Twinkle’s friends that he fainted in a park and was given lemonade before being taken into police custody since his friends weren’t around. However, the family remains unclear about the exact events that led to his death.
Baljeet Kaur, Twinkle’s mother, recalled her final call with her son two days ago when he appeared well. The following day, she tried reaching him but was told by a flatmate that Twinkle had gone out with some boys, possibly to look for work. Later, the flatmate said Twinkle fainted and reportedly suffered a heart attack, but the details remain vague.
Twinkle had plans to bring his mother to Italy after settling down, dreaming of a reunion in two years. His mother shared her heartbreak, saying, “This was my youngest and most beloved son. He always told me, ‘Mom, once I settle here, I will call you to join me.’ I never imagined this would happen. I request the government to help return my son’s body so we can perform his last rites in Punjab.”
The family’s pain and uncertainty highlight the need for clear answers and support. They urge the Indian government to intervene promptly and ensure that Twinkle’s body is brought home to India for cremation according to Punjabi customs.
