Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu – November 19, 2025: Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the South India Natural Farming Summit in Coimbatore, underscoring India's commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices. This three-day event, running until November 21, draws 5,000 farmers, agricultural specialists, and advocates to highlight the natural farming methods popularized by the late organic farming pioneer Nammalvar.
Throughout the summit, PM Modi interacted with local farmers engaged in natural farming, recognizing 10 outstanding individuals for their vital roles in promoting sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced the release of the 21st installment of the PM-KISAN initiative, totaling Rs 18,000 crore, which will benefit nearly 9 crore farmers nationwide.
Known as the “Manchester of South India” for its industrial significance, Coimbatore is fully prepared for the summit, with strict traffic reroutes on Avinashi Road. Access to this road will be restricted from 12 noon to 4 pm, and truck entry to the city will be prohibited between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Enhanced security measures at Coimbatore International Airport will limit private vehicle access and taxis from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to facilitate uninterrupted operations during the Prime Minister’s visit.
Tamil Nadu is a crucial player in India's agricultural landscape, ranking third in overall agricultural output, with a 9.18% contribution for 2023-24. The state leads in floriculture, ranks second in livestock production at 13.96%, and significantly contributes to spices (1.95%), fruits (6.50%), vegetables (4.62%), and plantations (25.40%). The summit serves as a vital forum for experts to exchange knowledge and strategies aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and increasing food exports, projected to reach Rs 2,43,042 crore for 2024-25 as per government data.
The South India Natural Farming Summit is poised to motivate farmers towards adopting organic practices, thus improving productivity while safeguarding the environment. With global focus on sustainable food production, this event highlights India's leadership in natural farming techniques and reinforces farmer empowerment through modern knowledge and government initiatives.
This summit not only honors the legacy of Nammalvar but also ushers in a new era of agricultural development in India, emphasizing sustainability, productivity, and export capabilities. It serves as an essential gathering for farmers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
