Man in Pennsylvania Injured After Dog Accidentally Discharges Shotgun

SHILLINGTON, PA — In a shocking incident, a 53-year-old resident of Shillington, Pennsylvania, found himself hospitalized after his dog accidentally activated a shotgun, injuring him in the back. The occurrence took place late Tuesday evening, while he was attempting to clean his firearm at home.

Local officials reported that the man was in a stable condition when he sought his son’s assistance. Upon arrival, the police discovered him on the floor and quickly transported him to Reading Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Medical professionals have indicated that another operation will be necessary for a complete recovery.

“During our response, we learned that the dog had leapt onto the bed, which resulted in the shotgun firing,” noted Corporal Michael Schoone from the Shillington Police Department. He mentioned that it's still uncertain if the dog pressed the trigger by accident or if a malfunction in the firearm played a role in the mishap.

This isn’t an isolated event. The United States has seen similar incidents, such as a March episode in Memphis where a dog stepped on a loaded shotgun, leading to a discharge, and a tragic 2018 case in Kansas where a German shepherd fatally shot its owner.

The Shillington event remains under investigation to clarify the specific details, emphasizing the critical need for stringent gun safety measures, especially in homes with pets.

The injured man is on the path to recovery, and law enforcement encourages gun owners to secure their firearms properly to avert such potential accidents, particularly around children and animals.
