Malaysia’s Islamist political party Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, widely known as PAS, is preparing to hold major internal discussions regarding its future cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations. The planned meeting comes amid growing tensions within the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed that the party leadership is expected to meet within the next few days to determine its next course of action. Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, he said the discussions may initially involve only PAS leaders before any formal talks with Bersatu take place.
The latest political friction emerged after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang publicly stated that the party would reassess its partnership with Bersatu over concerns that several recent actions had violated the spirit of unity within the opposition alliance.
Among the issues raised by PAS were Bersatu’s recent dismissal of several executive councillors in Kedah as well as the removal of Kelantan deputy speaker Datuk Mohamed Farid Mohamed Zawawi, all of whom were reportedly from Bersatu’s own ranks. These developments reportedly caused unease within PAS leadership circles.
Takiyuddin Hassan also defended PAS’ recent directive instructing party members to avoid making public comments regarding internal coalition matters. According to him, the move was intended to prevent confusion and avoid worsening political tensions within the alliance.
He stated that while party members still have freedom of expression, decisions concerning coalition matters should remain under the control of the leadership to ensure unity and discipline. PAS leaders believe uncontrolled public statements could further complicate the already sensitive political situation.
The discussions are expected to play an important role in determining the future direction of Malaysia’s opposition politics. Political observers say any major shift in relations between PAS and Bersatu could significantly affect the stability and strategy of Perikatan Nasional ahead of future elections and national political developments.
The upcoming meeting is being closely watched by political analysts and supporters as both parties remain key forces within Malaysia’s opposition landscape. Any decision taken before Aidiladha could reshape alliances and political dynamics within the country.
