China’s giant panda twins Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei have safely returned to their homeland, completing an emotional and symbolic journey from Japan to China. The twins arrived at Chengdu’s Tianfu International Airport early Wednesday morning and were later transported to a conservation and research facility in Ya’an, Sichuan province, where they will remain under quarantine and close observation.
The pandas landed in Chengdu at around 1 a.m. and reached Ya’an by 6 a.m., following a carefully planned and smoothly managed transfer process. Visuals shared by conservation teams showed the pandas being gently unloaded from the aircraft and moved in specially designed secure crates. Trained staff in protective gear supervised every stage to ensure the animals’ safety, comfort, and wellbeing throughout the journey.
Born in 2021 at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei quickly became public favourites, attracting large crowds and building a strong emotional bond with visitors. Over the years, they grew into symbols of joy and affection, with thousands of people following their development from birth. Their departure from Japan was marked by emotional farewells, as supporters gathered to say goodbye to the pandas they had watched grow up.
Their parents, Shin Shin and Ri Ri, had already returned to China in 2024 after the completion of an international cooperation agreement. Under long-standing conservation and breeding programs, pandas born outside China are typically transferred back between the ages of two and four to become part of national breeding, research, and protection initiatives.
For decades, panda exchanges have served as symbols of goodwill, cooperation, and cultural connection between countries. These gentle animals have played an important role in building people-to-people relationships, strengthening diplomatic ties, and promoting global awareness about wildlife conservation.
Conservation officials noted that Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei have acted as living symbols of friendship between China and Japan, bringing communities closer through shared love for nature and wildlife. Their return reflects both conservation priorities and the continuation of international environmental cooperation.
Now settled in Sichuan, the twin pandas will begin a new chapter focused on health monitoring, scientific research, and long-term conservation protection. They will become part of China’s broader national effort to preserve, protect, and expand the giant panda population, contributing to global wildlife conservation for future generations.
