Ozempic Arrives in India: Safer and Cheaper Alternatives

Ozempic Arrives in India: Safer and Cheaper Alternatives

Post by : Maya Rahman

Ozempic, the popular semaglutide injection known for controlling blood sugar and supporting weight loss, has officially entered the Indian market, priced at Rs 8,800 per pen for the starter dose. Its launch has created curiosity, high demand, and discussions across India, especially as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle-related health issues continue to rise. While Ozempic offers once-weekly convenience and strong clinical evidence, its cost has raised concerns for many Indians, as medical expenses are mostly paid out-of-pocket.

Experts suggest that safer and more affordable alternatives are available. Rybelsus, an oral version of semaglutide, is easier to take and priced between Rs 2,567 and Rs 2,853 for 10 tablets. Trulicity is a weekly injection for type 2 diabetes, costing around Rs 2,200 per week or Rs 9,400 monthly for the 0.75 mg dosage. Victoza is another pen-based option that controls blood sugar and costs Rs 3,726 to Rs 5,500 per 3 ml pen. Older GLP-1 options like Bydureon and Byetta are also available at lower costs, suitable for weight loss and diabetes management.

For weight loss specifically, drugs like Orlistat, Bupropion/Naltrexone (Contrave), and Saxenda offer alternatives. Orlistat blocks fat absorption and costs Rs 945 to Rs 3,780 per month. Contrave curbs appetite, costing Rs 3,920 to Rs 10,080 per month. Saxenda, a daily injection for obese patients, can cost Rs 2,000 to Rs 12,000 per pen.

Doctors emphasize consulting professionals before using any drug. Lifestyle programs including diet and behavioral therapy remain the most cost-effective and safe approach. India now offers multiple alternatives to Ozempic, making diabetes and weight-loss management more accessible.
