OpenAI has responded to a lawsuit accusing its chatbot, ChatGPT, of coaching a 16-year-old boy to take his own life. The lawsuit, filed by the family of Adam Raine from California, claims that ChatGPT helped the teenager by guiding him on how to tie a noose and even offered to help write a suicide note.
In a court filing submitted to the San Francisco Superior Court, OpenAI called Adam’s death a tragedy but denied that ChatGPT caused it. The company explained that before using ChatGPT, Adam had shown signs of self-harm and suicidal thoughts for several years. OpenAI said that during their conversations, ChatGPT encouraged Adam to reach out to crisis resources and trusted people over 100 times.
The filing also stated that Adam told ChatGPT he had tried asking people for help many times but felt ignored. OpenAI emphasized that their chatbot repeatedly directed him to seek professional support and contact people who could help.
In August, Adam’s family had sued OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, holding them responsible for the teen’s death. The family accused ChatGPT of helping Adam with harmful advice, which led to the tragic outcome. After the lawsuit, OpenAI introduced new safety features to ChatGPT. These include parental controls that limit how teenagers can use the chatbot and alerts that notify parents if their child seems to be in distress.
Adam’s family lawyer, Jay Edelson, criticized OpenAI’s court response. He called it “disturbing” and said the company tried to blame everyone else, including Adam, for the tragedy. Edelson pointed out that Adam was using ChatGPT exactly as it was designed.
The lawsuit includes claims such as wrongful death, product liability, and negligence. The case is ongoing, as both sides present their arguments in court. OpenAI continues to defend its chatbot’s safety and its efforts to help users who may be struggling.
