Karung Onler, the ex-husband of Olympic boxing star Mary Kom, has categorically denied allegations that he defrauded her out of significant sums and wrongfully seized property purchased with her income. He calls these accusations unfounded and counters with serious claims against the sports icon.
In a conversation with IANS, Onler revealed that their marital troubles trace back over a decade. He claimed that in 2013, Kom was engaged in an affair with a younger boxer, resulting in familial conflicts that required reconciliation.
Onler further alleged that since 2017, Kom has maintained a relationship with someone linked to the Mary Kom Boxing Academy. While he possesses WhatsApp messages and other proof, he has opted to remain quiet for the family's sake.
He expressed no objection to Kom's desire to move on but fiercely contests accusations of financial misconduct. "She is free to remarry. But don’t accuse me without evidence," he stated, demanding that Kom substantiate her claims of financial theft.
Doubting the claims of having vast sums, Onler pointed to his living conditions, noting he resides in a rented home in Delhi and invited scrutiny of his financial status.
"If I supposedly stole ₹5 crore, she should present the evidence. My lifestyle reflects no such wealth," he remarked.
Onler dismissed claims regarding property ownership, asserting that if any land was indeed transferred to him, Kom would have the necessary documentation. He characterized their divorce as amicable, although legal matters remain unresolved.
Onler emphasized his motivation to avoid legal disputes for the well-being of their children, labeling public accusations as detrimental.
He recounted his unwavering support for Kom throughout her career and his pivotal role in establishing the Mary Kom Boxing Academy, expressing emotional distress over feeling "used and discarded."
Addressing their children, Onler stated he has every right to be involved in their lives and refuted assertions that he had alcohol problems, which he argued should remain private.
Onler also indicated that despite an injury prior to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Kom traveled to Mumbai, claiming to have evidence of continued relationships during that time.
Married in 2005, Mary Kom and Onler have four children and finalized their divorce in 2023.
Previously, Mary Kom accused Onler of exploiting her trust, alleging he secured loans against her property and illicitly transferred assets, causing her financial losses in Manipur. She stated her realizations surfaced during her recovery from an injury before the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Mary Kom chose to disclose her divorce publicly after repeated attempts to malign her character over the past year, despite her initial desire for privacy.
With both parties firmly denying each other's allegations, this legal battle continues to captivate national interest.
