Shelter Order in Effect for Old Fort Residents Due to Landslide Threat

Shelter Order in Effect for Old Fort Residents Due to Landslide Threat

Post by : Shweta

Residents close to the Old Fort area in British Columbia are urged to stay indoors following new indications of instability at the landslide location. Authorities have enacted a shelter-in-place order as safety apprehensions grow.

This advisory comes after noticeable cracking was detected at the historic Old Fort landslide site, situated roughly five kilometers south of Fort St. John. The visible fractures imply potential further movement of the slope, threatening nearby homes and infrastructure.

As a preventive measure, Old Fort Road, the principal route for local access, has been shut down. According to communications from Emergency Info BC, affected residents are required to remain sheltered until it is safe to reopen the road. Officials are emphasizing the necessity of this action to ensure public safety during ongoing assessments.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit noted a comprehensive technical investigation will take place before any decision about the road’s reopening is made. There is an understanding that the closure may disrupt normal activities, but the emphasis remains on prioritizing public safety.

Emergency services are collaborating with various agencies, including the Peace River Regional District and the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, to oversee the landslide and maintain resident safety while planning road restoration when appropriate.

Old Fort has a record of landslide incidents. A significant slide in 2018 compromised the sole road to the community of about 150 residents, necessitating evacuations. The situation aggravated again in 2020 due to heavy rainfall, leading to further damage to the same route.

Considering this precedent, officials are approaching the current circumstances with prudence. Residents have been advised to remain informed through official updates and to revisit their emergency preparedness plans. Authorities will continue their vigilant monitoring of the site and share updates as more information becomes accessible.

This situation emphasizes the ongoing hazards faced by communities situated in areas with unstable geology, particularly in regions vulnerable to weather-induced landslides.
