As the beloved Netflix series Stranger Things approaches its final season, Noah Schnapp, who became a household name through his portrayal of Will Byers, is taking a moment to reflect on his remarkable journey. The emotional weight of concluding this phase of his life is palpable, given that the series has significantly influenced both his career trajectory and personal growth.
One of the most cherished aspects of his involvement in the show has been his enduring friendship with Millie Bobby Brown, who embodies Eleven. Their bond blossomed during their teenage years as they navigated sudden fame together, evolving into a deep, sibling-like relationship built on trust and loyalty.
Drawing parallels between their characters, he mentioned, “The loyalty we share is something I truly value. Playing siblings on-screen leads us to joke about being ‘triplets’ in real life. I genuinely consider Millie as both my on-screen and off-screen sister.”
Noah holds Millie in high regard, particularly for her honesty. He admits, “When it comes to her advice, I never second-guess her intentions. There's always a genuine truth in her words that grounds me and keeps me connected to my core self.”
He attributes much of his ability to maintain a sense of wonder to Millie, who reminds him to cherish his youthful spirit in the face of industry pressures. “In this business, losing that childlike enthusiasm is easy, but she helps keep that spark alive and ensures I remember that part of me still exists, even if it's hard to access at times.”
Growing up as a public figure brought its unique set of challenges. Reflecting on the constant scrutiny he faced, Noah remarked that while many teens deal with typical awkward phases, he lived under a spotlight with the world watching. This scrutiny extended to intimate aspects of his identity, including discussions around his sexuality, surfacing before he was prepared.
The pressure to uphold a mature facade often felt burdensome. “In a small town, embarrassing moments are shared only among friends, but being under constant observation adds a different layer of intensity. There's an unspoken expectation to appear knowledgeable and composed, even while grappling with one's own identity journey.”
However, Noah emphasizes that his experiences weren't solely negative. Growing up alongside co-stars like Millie, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, and Gaten Matarazzo formed a robust support system that eased the journey. Together, they confronted mutual challenges, forming bonds that transformed their shared experiences into something more positive.
“Despite the hurdles, it was equally rewarding,” he says. “There were times when public scrutiny impacted my confidence, yet my co-stars always helped me regain that lost sense of self. Sharing these pivotal moments kept me grounded through it all.”
As Stranger Things nears its conclusion, Noah grapples with feelings of nostalgia and gratitude. Not only has the series launched his career, but it has also shaped his character, fostered lasting friendships, and instilled resilience. Though the ending stirs deep emotions, he remains thankful for the incredible journey and the companions who have walked it beside him.
