The Nigerian government has ordered a full and independent investigation into a deadly airstrike in the country’s northeast that reportedly killed at least 200 people, many of whom are feared to be civilians. The incident has sparked serious concerns over the conduct of military operations in insurgent-controlled regions, where distinguishing between militant targets and civilian presence remains highly complex.
The airstrike targeted Jilli village in Borno State, an area believed to be under the influence of extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. Authorities have described the location as a high-risk zone that has long been used by militants for logistics, supply coordination, and planning attacks, making it a frequent target for security operations.
Nigeria’s Information Minister, Mohammed Idris Malagi, expressed regret over the loss of civilian lives but firmly defended the operation. He stated that the strike was based on credible intelligence and was aimed at confirmed terrorist targets rather than civilians. According to him, the operation was deliberate and carefully planned, not an indiscriminate attack.
Officials further highlighted the difficulties faced by security forces in such conflict zones, where militants often operate within civilian-populated areas. In regions like Jilli, markets and supply routes are frequently used by both insurgents and ordinary residents, creating a blurred line that increases the risk of unintended casualties during military strikes.
The government has confirmed that the ongoing investigation will thoroughly examine both the planning and execution of the airstrike to identify any possible lapses or errors. Meanwhile, rights groups have consistently warned that targeting contested areas such as markets can carry a high risk of civilian casualties, especially in regions where people rely on such locations for survival despite security threats.
The broader conflict in northeast Nigeria has been ongoing for more than 17 years, with militant groups attempting to establish control and expand their influence. The prolonged insurgency has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people, leaving the region in a fragile and volatile state despite continued military efforts to restore peace and stability.
