Dhading, Nepal — At least 19 people died when a passenger bus plunged about 200 metres (650 feet) from a mountainous road in Behighat, Dhading District, Nepal, early Monday, police said.
The bus, carrying 44 passengers, was traveling from the tourist town of Pokhara to the capital Kathmandu. Among the dead were Indian, British, and Chinese citizens.
A total of 25 people were injured, including a New Zealander and another Chinese national. All injured are being treated at hospitals in Kathmandu.
Authorities noted that road accidents are common in mountainous Nepal due to poor road conditions. Hundreds of people die in traffic accidents each year.
The Nepal government has ordered an official investigation into the cause of the crash. Emergency services responded promptly to rescue survivors and treat the injured.
