Following a concerning incident, Latvia's military requested NATO fighter jets after two drones, originating from Russian territory, descended upon an oil storage site in Rezekne, situated near the border.
Latvian officials reported that the drones caused damage to four vacant oil tanks located about 40 kilometers away from Russia. Local police and firefighters later collected debris believed to be from the drones.
Defence Minister Andris Spruds informed national media LSM that it is presumed the drones were launched from Ukraine, likely aimed at Russian targets before crossing into Latvia.
In response to the event, NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission deployed aircraft to the region to oversee developments and assist in security measures.
This drone incident occurs amidst escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, Russia issued a warning indicating potential strikes on foreign embassies in Kyiv if Ukrainian forces interfere with Moscow’s Victory Day festivities on May 8 and 9.
Additionally, the Russian military hinted at plans for significant assaults on Kyiv should Ukraine ignore Moscow's unilateral ceasefire during the upcoming Victory Day celebrations, which will include the traditional military parade at Red Square.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia’s ongoing attacks, highlighting a clear disregard for peace proposals set forth by Kyiv.
