Myanmar to Conduct Third Election Phase Despite Ongoing Turmoil

Myanmar to Conduct Third Election Phase Despite Ongoing Turmoil

Post by : Saif Rahman

According to state media, Myanmar is preparing for the third phase of its general election on January 25, 2026. The initial two phases are slated for December 28, 2025, and January 11, 2026, covering a total of 202 out of 330 townships nationwide. The upcoming phase will encompass 63 townships, as reported by the Global New Light of Myanmar.

This election is occurring in the midst of persisting civil strife following the military coup in 2021. Armed resistance groups have gained strength, complicating the logistics of a countrywide election. Analysts caution that conducting elections under these circumstances poses significant challenges and may not accurately reflect the sentiments of all citizens.

Junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing argues that these elections aim to form a stable government. However, he has also recognized that security issues will prevent a nationwide voting process. No specific dates have yet been announced for vote counting or results disclosure.

While the military claims the election is supported by the populace, experts caution that ongoing conflicts and security threats could hinder voter turnout and affect the integrity of the electoral process.

The third phase represents a pivotal moment for Myanmar’s military regime as it strives for political legitimacy beyond military control. The unfolding situation remains uncertain, and both citizens and international watchers will monitor the electoral developments with great interest.

The results from this phase could offer significant insights into Myanmar’s political trajectory and the prospects for stability amid ongoing conflict.
