Myanmar Tightens CNG Safety Rules, Expands Supply

Myanmar Tightens CNG Safety Rules, Expands Supply

Post by : Shakul

Ministry of Energy Myanmar has expanded the availability of compressed natural gas (CNG) by opening distribution outlets across key regions, including Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, and major townships. The move aims to support smooth public transportation and ensure affordable access to fuel for commuters and operators.

Authorities have simultaneously introduced stricter safety regulations for CNG-powered vehicles, highlighting the risks associated with gas leaks, faulty cylinders, and weak pipelines. Officials stressed that only vehicles passing mandatory annual inspections will be allowed to continue operating with CNG to prevent fire hazards and accidents.

The government has also enforced detailed checks on CNG cylinders, particularly those older than five years. Cylinders exceeding 15 years of use will undergo additional scrutiny, with many expected to be rejected and destroyed to maintain safety standards. Vehicle owners are required to comply with these inspection protocols or face suspension of fuel supply.

In addition, strict penalties have been announced for non-compliance. Vehicles that fail to undergo inspection within specified timelines may face temporary or permanent bans on CNG purchases. Authorities have urged all CNG vehicle owners to complete inspections by April 30, 2026, to ensure uninterrupted service and safe travel for the public.
