A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale shook the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor was recorded at 11:48 AM IST at a shallow depth of 15 kilometres, with its epicentre pinpointed at latitude 12.59° N and longitude 92.34° E.
Despite the quake being felt in nearby areas, no reports of damage or casualties have emerged, as its offshore location and moderate intensity reduced the risk to coastal populations. Officials, however, highlighted that shallow earthquakes, even of moderate magnitude, can be felt more strongly near their epicentre, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
The NCS shared details of the earthquake on the social media platform X, confirming the occurrence and reassuring the public that no tsunami warning has been issued. Coastal communities have been advised to remain alert and follow safety measures in case of any unforeseen developments.
This tremor comes a day after a more powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the North Pacific Ocean. While the two seismic events are unrelated, they underscore the persistent tectonic activity affecting different regions of the world, reflecting the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the Earth’s crust.
Seismologists continue to monitor the Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions for any aftershocks or unusual activity, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas. The 4.4-magnitude quake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic events and the ongoing need for vigilance.
