Masdar, a global leader in clean energy, and Austria’s OMV have formalized a joint venture to develop a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyser plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. The project, among Europe’s largest, aims to produce renewable hydrogen to support decarbonisation in industrial sectors.
Construction started in September 2025, with operations expected to begin by 2027. The joint venture is structured with OMV holding the majority stake while Masdar owns 49 percent. The collaboration leverages OMV’s industrial and strategic experience and Masdar’s technical and financial expertise in renewable energy projects worldwide.
OMV will supply the renewable electricity required for hydrogen production and retain ownership of the output, expanding on its current 10 MW green hydrogen facility in Schwechat. The project also lays groundwork for future ventures, exploring sustainable aviation fuels, synthetic chemicals, and broader green hydrogen initiatives across Europe and the UAE.
The partnership reflects a growing focus on energy transition, aiming to provide scalable solutions for hard-to-abate industries while advancing Europe’s hydrogen economy. With the joint venture anticipated to finalize approvals and documentation by early 2026, the project signals a significant investment in Austria’s clean energy infrastructure and the wider European renewable sector.
