In a dramatic Champions League clash on Wednesday, Manchester City overcame Real Madrid 2-1, amplifying the pressure on Madrid's coach, Xabi Alonso. Missing their star Kylian Mbappe due to injury, Real took an early lead with Rodrygo's goal. However, City responded quickly, netting efforts from Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland to secure a crucial victory at the electrifying Bernabeu Stadium. Speculations in Spain suggest Alonso's job could be in jeopardy if results don’t improve, raising concerns among supporters.
The storied 15-time champions have only managed two victories in their last eight outings and are struggling to maintain a top-eight position in the league. Guardiola remarked on Madrid’s strong start but commended his squad for their resilience. Alonso noted that Mbappe did not play due to knee discomfort, opting for young striker Gonzalo Garcia instead.
Rodrygo's 28th-minute goal marked a significant return to form, ending his scoring drought. He celebrated with Alonso, emphasizing the unity among players as they navigate this challenging period.
City equalized in the 35th minute after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois misjudged a Gvardiol header, allowing O’Reilly to capitalize. A penalty awarded just before halftime saw Haaland convert effortlessly, putting City ahead. Despite a few impressive saves from Courtois, Madrid failed to find the back of the net in the second half.
The evening was marred by whistles from frustrated fans as Real struggled for opportunities. Even the late introduction of young talent Endrick couldn’t alter the outcome, despite him hitting the crossbar. Discontent among supporters is growing, and Alonso’s future continues to be a hot topic following this loss. Defender Raul Asencio voiced solidarity with their coach, promising efforts to improve.
Although the team remains hopeful for a turnaround, the mounting pressure, fan dissatisfaction, and poor form have left Alonso’s status precarious.
