Malaysia Plans Biodiesel Shift from B10 to B15

Malaysia Plans Biodiesel Shift from B10 to B15

Post by : Shakul

The Malaysian government has announced plans to increase the biodiesel blend rate from B10 to B15 as part of efforts to manage fuel supply challenges and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the transition will begin with an increase to B12, as the country already has the necessary infrastructure in place to support the shift without additional cost.

The move comes amid ongoing global energy uncertainties linked to the West Asia conflict, which has disrupted fuel markets and raised concerns over long-term supply stability.

According to official data, Malaysia produced 975,207 metric tonnes of biodiesel in 2025, while its total production capacity stands at 2.36 million metric tonnes. This indicates that the country has sufficient industrial capability to support higher biodiesel blending.

The government views biodiesel as a practical and immediate solution to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Officials noted that existing supply chains, blending facilities, and infrastructure can support the transition in a structured manner.

Authorities also stated that increasing biodiesel usage can help extend the country’s diesel reserves. Future plans include upgrading facilities to support higher blends such as B20 and B30, particularly for commercial and public sectors.

The government will continue engaging with industry stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation. It also plans to monitor global developments closely while focusing on building a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
