Malaysia Reports 18 Baby Abandonment Cases in 2026

Parliament Receives Latest Figures

Malaysia recorded 18 baby abandonment cases between January and March 2026, according to figures presented in Parliament. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying shared the data during the Dewan Rakyat sitting while outlining the government's efforts to address the issue.

Cases Lower Than Full-Year 2025

Lim said the country recorded 72 baby abandonment cases throughout 2025. The latest figures show that 18 cases were reported during the first three months of 2026, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and preventive measures.

Selangor Records Highest Number

Selangor reported the highest number of cases with 10 incidents during the January to March period. Sabah and Penang each recorded two cases, while Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Sarawak reported one case each.

Government Continues Prevention Efforts

The Deputy Minister said the government remains committed to tackling baby abandonment through awareness programmes, family support initiatives and cooperation with relevant agencies. Authorities continue to strengthen measures aimed at protecting children and supporting vulnerable families.

Parliament Discusses Child Welfare

The issue was raised during the Dewan Rakyat session as lawmakers discussed child welfare and social protection. The ministry stressed the importance of public awareness and early intervention to prevent similar incidents.

Authorities Urge Community Support

Officials encouraged communities to support individuals facing difficult situations and seek assistance from relevant government agencies. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding children's welfare and reducing baby abandonment cases nationwide.
