Avalanche Strikes Sonamarg, Kashmir; No Casualties Reported

Avalanche Strikes Sonamarg, Kashmir; No Casualties Reported

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Tuesday night, Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir was affected by a significant avalanche, engulfing homes and vehicles in the Sarbal locality. Despite the magnitude of the event, officials have confirmed that there have been no casualties or injuries reported.

The avalanche occurred at approximately 10:12 pm, causing a deluge of snow to cascade down the mountains towards surrounding residences and hotels. Footage from CCTV captured the dramatic moment when the snow overpowered the structures in its vicinity.

Authorities have reassured the public that there have been no fatalities. A high-intensity avalanche warning had been in effect since Monday due to persistent snowfall throughout the region.

The ongoing snowfall on Tuesday resulted in the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar airport, leaving many tourists stranded.

National Highway 44 was shut down as snow piled up near the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund and Banihal, rendering the road unsafe for travel. At Srinagar International Airport, all 58 flights scheduled for the day—29 incoming and 29 outgoing—were canceled due to the snowfall that made runway operations hazardous.

Authorities are closely monitoring developments and have advised both residents and tourists to remain vigilant in areas prone to avalanches.
