Celebrated American actress Lucy Liu, famous for her performances in Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, Lucky Number Slevin, and Elementary, is taking center stage in her first significant dramatic role in Rosemead. After nearly three decades in the Hollywood scene, Liu has come to realize the limited dramatic roles available to her.
Surprised by her leap into a leading dramatic part, Liu remarked, “I just hasn’t had the chances to explore this side of my work. It's wild to think I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years and am just now having my first leading role like this.”
Liu also talked about the stereotypes and biases she has encountered on her journey. She noted critiques aimed at her portrayal of the “Dragon Lady” trope in Kill Bill (2003), questioning why such assessments are less common for other actors.
Her experiences highlight how assumptions based on appearance have constrained her opportunities. “I cannot change my appearance to fit into a Caucasian mold, but I believe that if I could, so many more doors would open for me,” she shared.
Despite these industry challenges, Liu's passion for storytelling is unwavering. “The system has many faults, but it shouldn't deter you from believing in the wonder of filmmaking,” she added, recalling the early boost her career gave her.
In Rosemead, Liu portrays Irene, a Chinese immigrant dealing with her son’s mental health struggles. Based on a 2017 article, the film introduces Liu as both lead and producer. It premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 and is set to release in the United States on December 5.
