A senior commander linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Sheikh Yousuf Afridi, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking another incident in a series of targeted killings of militants in Pakistan. Authorities say the attack appeared to be carefully planned, with attackers opening fire and leaving no chance for escape.
According to initial reports, Afridi was ambushed by unidentified assailants who fired multiple rounds at close range. Investigators believe the killing was a targeted assassination, although no group has claimed responsibility so far. Security agencies have launched a probe to determine the motive and identify those behind the attack.
Afridi was reportedly a close associate of Hafiz Saeed and was considered an important figure in the group’s regional operations. His role allegedly involved maintaining networks and coordinating activities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area, making him a key operative within the organization.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of attacks on high-profile militants across Pakistan in recent months. Last month, Amir Hamza was reportedly targeted by gunmen in Lahore, though he survived the attack. Such incidents have raised concerns about internal security and possible rivalries or external operations targeting militant figures.
Earlier cases also highlight a similar trend. The elder brother of Masood Azhar, identified as Muhammad Tahir Anwar, reportedly died under mysterious circumstances. Meanwhile, another senior militant, Abu Qatal, was killed by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan in a separate incident.
Security experts note that such targeted killings have been increasing since 2023, with dozens of individuals linked to militant groups reportedly attacked in different parts of the country, including major cities like Lahore and Karachi. The reasons behind these killings remain unclear, with speculation ranging from internal conflicts to covert operations.
The latest killing of Afridi is expected to further intensify scrutiny on militant networks operating within Pakistan. Authorities are likely to increase surveillance and security measures, while analysts continue to monitor whether this pattern signals a broader shift in the region’s security landscape.
