In an electrifying conclusion to Stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country, Igor Arrieta of UAE Team Emirates-XRG showcased remarkable talent, finishing second behind Ineos Grenadiers' Axel Laurance in a gripping uphill sprint in Basauri.
From the outset, the race turned fiercely competitive, with riders vigorously vying to establish a leading breakaway. Arrieta's unyielding spirit saw him secure a spot in a select group that managed to distance itself from the peloton.
Once at the front, the young rider from the Basque region was instrumental in sustaining and growing their lead, which reached approximately 1 minute and 30 seconds before tackling the challenging penultimate climb.
On the steep ascent of Bikotx Gane, alongside a small cadre of competitors, Arrieta pushed the pace. Their concerted efforts allowed the breakaway to extend its lead to almost two minutes as they neared the final climb up Sarasola.
Leveraging his local knowledge, Arrieta made a strategic move over the summit of the final climb, with only Laurance able to keep pace. The two riders then broke away from the trailing group, setting the stage for a head-to-head race for victory.
As the final 20 kilometers approached, both competitors worked seamlessly to maintain their lead. However, the uphill finish posed a tactical challenge for Arrieta against the fast-finishing Frenchman.
In a bold strategy, Arrieta began his sprint early in Basauri, hoping to catch Laurance unprepared. Despite his strong efforts, Laurance managed to overtake him in the last 75 meters, clinching the win.
While narrowly missing the victory, Arrieta's exceptional performance earned him the combativity award and a commendable position on the podium, marking an important milestone for the Navarre native on his home turf.
