Kyrgyzstan, World Bank Hold Key Economic Talks

Kyrgyzstan, World Bank Hold Key Economic Talks

Post by : Shakul

Washington, USA, April 14, 2026 — Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Adylbek Kasymaliev, held important discussions with Anna Bjerde, Managing Director for Operations at the World Bank. The meeting took place during the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Washington.

During the talks, both sides discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation opportunities, focusing on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth initiatives in Kyrgyzstan.

Kasymaliev highlighted the country’s strong economic performance, stating that Kyrgyzstan has achieved an average annual growth rate of 10.2% over the past four years. He further noted that GDP growth is expected to reach 11.1% in 2025, reflecting the positive impact of ongoing reforms.

He also emphasized that over 273,000 new jobs were created in 2025, driven by reforms and increased investor confidence. Investments in fixed capital rose by 18.4% compared to 2024, signaling strong economic momentum and public optimism.

The Chairman shared Kyrgyzstan’s interest in adopting global best practices, including the UAE’s “Government Accelerators” program and Japan’s “One Village - One Product” initiative to boost rural development and exports. He also updated on the progress of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower project, a key priority for the country.

Kasymaliev raised concerns about climate challenges in mountainous regions, noting that they support over 15% of the global population and provide up to 80% of the world’s freshwater. He warned that glacier melting, land degradation, and rising disaster risks threaten long-term sustainability and water security.

In response, Bjerde praised Kyrgyzstan’s reform efforts and expressed strong support for initiatives in agriculture, green energy, and regional development. She highlighted the importance of human capital development, including improvements in education, healthcare, and workforce skills.

Both sides concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation. They agreed to expand joint efforts in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and industry, while maintaining close dialogue to address key economic challenges.
