Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, has sharply dismissed South Korea’s hopes of improving relations between the two countries. She said on Tuesday that South Korea’s desire for peace talks and better ties with the North is an unrealistic dream that will never come true.
Kim Yo Jong holds an important position as a director in North Korea’s ruling party and often speaks on behalf of the regime. She criticized a recent comment from a South Korean official who suggested that talks with North Korea might restart following her reaction to a drone that reportedly flew into North Korean airspace.
In a statement released by North Korea’s state media, Kim said South Korea’s expectations have “already gone wrong” and called their hopes “wild dreams.” She insisted that any talk of repairing North-South relations is impossible under the current circumstances.
Kim also accused South Korea of carrying out a “serious provocation” by allowing drones to fly into North Korea, which she described as a violation of North Korea’s sovereignty. She demanded a formal apology from the South Korean government and insisted that Seoul promise to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Despite South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung’s administration making efforts to improve ties with Pyongyang, including sending diplomatic overtures, North Korea has continued to reject these advances. Kim Yo Jong’s statement makes clear that Pyongyang is not interested in reopening talks anytime soon.
The tense relations between the two Koreas have been marked by repeated incidents, and North Korea’s strong reaction to the drone event signals a firm stance against any perceived threats. Kim Yo Jong’s warning to South Korea highlights the deep challenges in restoring peace and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula.
