Former First Lady of South Korea, Kim Keon Hee, has received a 20-month prison sentence for corruption following a ruling from the Seoul Central District Court this Wednesday.
The court determined that Kim accepted luxurious gifts, such as a Graff diamond necklace and a Chanel handbag, from the Unification Church in return for political assistance. The judges concluded that she exploited her position as First Lady for selfish interests.
Expressing her remorse through her legal team, Kim stated she “humbly accepts” the court's verdict and feels regret for the public distress caused.
Initially, prosecutors sought a 15-year sentence on charges of stock price manipulation, unlawful political donations, and bribery. Nevertheless, the court dismissed two charges due to insufficient evidence. Following the decision, prosecutors declared intentions to appeal as they view the penalty as overly lenient.
Kim has been detained since August after the court sanctioned her arrest, fearing she might tamper with evidence. Her controversies proved to be a significant challenge for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, adversely affecting his approval ratings during his tenure.
Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted after imposing martial law in December 2024 and was sentenced to five years in prison this month on associated charges. He is currently awaiting a ruling on a rebellion allegation, facing potential life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
Investigators assert that Kim played no role in the martial law implementation. Authorities allege that Yoon conspired for over a year to impose military control over political rivals, but there is no evidence tying Kim to that plan.
Analysts suggest that Yoon is more likely to receive a life sentence given that South Korea has not executed anyone since 1997.
