K2 and WeRide Collaborate to Introduce Driverless Buses in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Abu Dhabi: K2 and WeRide have formalized a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at UMEX 2026, aiming to jointly deploy driverless buses throughout Abu Dhabi. This initiative is backed by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC).

The alliance is set to bolster Abu Dhabi's ambition for intelligent mobility, facilitating the implementation of autonomous public transport solutions, and enhancing the emirate's role as a hub for innovative and sustainable transportation.

Waleed Alblooshi, Vice President of Strategy at K2, emphasized that this partnership underscores the significance of collaboration in developing a future where autonomous technologies operate efficiently and sustainably. He noted that K2 will provide regional expertise and insights into fleet management alongside experience in real-world mobility implementations.

Ryan Zhan, Regional General Manager for Middle East and Africa at WeRide, remarked that the MoU signifies a new chapter for the company's growth in the region. He pointed out that merging WeRide's Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities with K2's localized knowledge will expedite the advancement of safer and smarter public transport across the UAE and the Middle East.

K2 boasts extensive experience in the autonomous transport sector, with its subsidiaries having already tested robotaxis and last-mile delivery services over tens of thousands of kilometers.
