An Indonesian lawmaker has called on the government to ban Israeli passport holders from entering the country following a deadly attack on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Lukmanul Hakim, a member of Jakarta’s regional legislative council, urged strong diplomatic action after three Indonesian soldiers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed in southern Lebanon.
The attack occurred on March 29 when Israeli artillery reportedly struck a UNIFIL base, escalating tensions in the already volatile region. The incident resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers and injuries to several others, drawing condemnation and calls for accountability.
Hakim stated that Indonesia, as a sovereign nation, should respond firmly by restricting entry to Israeli passport holders. He argued that such a move would demonstrate the country’s commitment to international law and solidarity with its fallen personnel.
Indonesia has historically not maintained formal diplomatic relations with Israel and has consistently supported Palestinian statehood in international forums. The latest incident has further intensified public and political pressure for a tougher stance.
President Prabowo Subianto has been urged to take decisive steps, while the government is currently working on repatriating the bodies of the deceased soldiers. Authorities have also confirmed that the victims will receive posthumous honors and compensation for their families.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has coordinated closely with UN officials to manage the aftermath, including medical treatment for the injured peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon.
The attack has raised broader concerns about the safety of UN peacekeeping missions operating in conflict zones, particularly amid ongoing hostilities involving Israel and armed groups in the region.
As diplomatic tensions rise, Indonesia is expected to weigh its response carefully, balancing international obligations with domestic sentiment and its long-standing foreign policy stance.
