External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Wednesday in Niagara, on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions on enhancing trade, energy, security, and people-to-people ties, signaling efforts to rebuild momentum in India–Canada relations.
Dr. Anand extended condolences to Jaishankar over the tragic explosion in New Delhi earlier this week, expressing Canada’s solidarity with India. “Delighted to meet FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada today. Congratulated her on hosting the #G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Appreciated the progress in implementation of the New Roadmap 2025. Look forward to the further rebuilding of our bilateral partnership,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
This was the third meeting between the two ministers this year, reflecting renewed engagement between New Delhi and Ottawa after a period of diplomatic strain.
According to the Canadian government’s readout, the ministers reviewed the ongoing law enforcement dialogue and assessed the progress of the Canada–India Roadmap 2025, a framework aimed at advancing cooperation in key sectors like energy, trade, and mobility.
Anand also acknowledged India’s growing global influence, noting that as the world’s fourth-largest economy, India remains a vital partner for Canada in strengthening international cooperation.
Officials noted that Jaishankar’s participation in the G7 deliberations underscores India’s commitment to working closely with major global powers and advocating for the concerns of the Global South.
The G7 meeting brought together leaders from major developed economies and partner nations to address pressing global challenges — including energy security, climate change, regional conflicts, and supply chain resilience.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that India’s involvement as a partner country highlights its dedication to promoting sustainable economic growth, strengthening Indo-Pacific cooperation, and fostering resilient global supply chains.
India’s engagement with G7 nations continues to reflect its rising diplomatic stature and its focus on advancing digital transformation, equitable energy transition, and global economic stability.
