Iran is witnessing its largest protests in years, now entering their 13th day amid an ongoing internet blackout. The demonstrations started over economic hardship but have escalated into widespread calls to end the Islamic Republic, with some protesters even demanding a return to monarchy. At least 48 protesters and 14 security personnel have died, while thousands have been arrested.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called the protesters "troublemakers" aiming to please the US president, accusing foreign interference in the unrest. Meanwhile, Iran sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council, blaming the US for fueling violence and vandalism during the protests.
US President Donald Trump warned Iran it is “in big trouble” and promised to “hit them very hard” if the government kills protesters, though he ruled out deploying troops. Trump also noted that the people have taken control of some cities unexpectedly.
The internet blackout, in effect since Thursday, has caused massive disruption. Cash machines stopped working, making it impossible for many to buy essentials, increasing public anxiety. Human rights groups warn of escalating violence and possible mass killings.
International leaders from the UK, Germany, and France condemned the killing of protesters and urged Iran to respect peaceful demonstrations and human rights. The United Nations echoed concerns, stressing the right to peaceful protest and government responsibility for safety.
Iran’s security forces have issued strict warnings, calling protesters “armed vandals” and threatening legal action against any attacks on government and military facilities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared it will continue operations until the "complete defeat" of what it calls the enemy’s plans.
Protests have spread across the country, with crowds chanting slogans against the regime. Fires and clashes have been reported in multiple cities. Families of many victims have come forward to confirm identities amid restrictions on media inside Iran.
This wave of protests is the biggest challenge to the regime since the deadly 2022 unrest following the death of Mahsa Amini in custody. That crisis saw hundreds killed and thousands detained, and fears now grow of another harsh crackdown.
