Gulf Cities Targeted by Iran in Retaliation for Strikes

ran escalated regional tensions on Saturday by firing missiles at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, and Riyadh, following coordinated attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian sites. The attacks have triggered alarms and raised fears of a wider Middle East conflict.

The UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that one Asian civilian was killed in Abu Dhabi when missile debris hit a residential area. Authorities called the attacks “cowardly acts that threaten civilians and regional stability.”

Residents in Dubai reported seeing missiles streak across the sky. One witness said, “The explosion was huge; it shook the windows,” while another described fireballs trailing smoke as they disappeared into the distance.

All affected cities host American military facilities. Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Air Base and Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port regularly house US forces. Doha’s Al Udeid Air Base is a key US Central Command hub, while Saudi Arabia has over 2,000 American troops, including at Prince Sultan Air Base with missile defense systems.

Bahrain reported missile strikes targeting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama. Jordan sounded emergency sirens, and Kuwait engaged air defense systems. Qatar confirmed intercepting the attacks, reporting no casualties or damage. Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the strikes as violations of sovereignty.

The attacks came after US and Israeli operations in Iran, including a strike near Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s offices. A school strike reportedly killed 24. US President Donald Trump described the operations as “major combat actions,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu framed it as a joint response to Iran’s perceived threat.

Global airlines have suspended flights across the Middle East, affecting airspace over Israel, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. Flights from India, including Air India and IndiGo, were diverted amid airspace closures.
