Inter Miami crafted a memorable chapter in their history by clinching their inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup, besting the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in an exhilarating final at Chase Stadium. Leading the charge was Lionel Messi, who provided crucial assists for two goals and earned the MVP title for his outstanding performance.
The match kicked off with Miami striking early; in the eighth minute, Messi’s brilliant pass to Tadeo Allende resulted in an own goal from a Vancouver defender. Despite Vancouver dominating key phases and creating several opportunities, Miami held their ground and counterattacked effectively.
As the clock hit the hour, Ali Ahmed equalized for Vancouver with a thunderous shot, only for Miami to swiftly respond. In the 71st minute, Messi seized a loose ball, setting up Rodrigo De Paul, who scored with poise, bringing the score to 2-1. The clincher came in stoppage time, with Messi assisting Allende for the final goal, rounding off a remarkable team effort.
This victory was particularly poignant for longtime teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who marked their last match with Miami. Messi lauded his companions, stating, “Ending their careers this way is very special. They’ve dedicated their lives to football, and I wish them all the best.”
Club co-owner David Beckham, instrumental in establishing the team, joined the players in celebration and reflected on their journey. “The team has worked hard all season, and tonight, they’ve made history. This is just the beginning,” Beckham expressed.
Inter Miami’s first MLS Cup victory solidifies their standing among the league’s top teams and highlights Messi’s extraordinary influence in his debut season in the United States.
